Ways to Practice Learning Letters and Sounds at Home

    • Recite each letter of the alphabet clearly so you can hear each letter
    • Make ABC flashcards and point to each letter as you read them 
    • Start by learning the letters in your first name 
    • Write your name and identify each letter
    • Adult writes child's first name, cut apart each let, and student recites and builds name 
    • Find and circle/highlight letters in a book, magazine, or newspaper 
    • Write letters in shaving cream, sand, or salt 
    • Use magnetic letters to explore, order, and recite letters
    • Use Play-Doh, pencils, sticks, straws, etc. to form uppercase letters
    • Play letter I spy 
    • Line up a series of toys and say the beginning sound of each one
    • Use sidewalk chalk, markers, or crayons to write letters in different colors
    • If you have internet access, watch alphabet videos on YouTube
    • Using your finger, write a letter on someone's back and guess the letter
    • Hide letters throughout the house and go on a letter hunt 
    • Hunt for letters with the lights off using a flashlight
    • Match upper and lowercase letters using your flashcards 
    • Using you finger, write giant letters in the air 
    • Use a post-it note and write the beginning sound of toys to label them 
    • Make an ABC book: write the letter and draw a simple corresponding picture
